How to Choose the Right Hotel: A 10-Point Checklist for Every Trip
A great hotel can make an average trip memorable, and a poor one can ruin a perfect itinerary. With hundreds of options in every city, it helps to have a clear method. Run through this checklist before you click “book”.
Start with location, not the room
Map out where you will spend most of your time — meetings, sightseeing, a wedding venue or the beach — and look for stays nearby. Saving a little on the room rate is rarely worth an extra hour of daily travel.
The 10-point checklist
Before confirming any booking, make sure you can answer each of these:
- Is it close to where I need to be, and is the area safe at night?
- What do the last three months of guest reviews say?
- Does the room type fit everyone comfortably (beds, occupancy, extra bed policy)?
- Are taxes and fees included in the price I am comparing?
- Is breakfast included, and is it worth it?
- What is the cancellation and modification policy?
- What are the check-in and check-out times — is early check-in possible?
- Is Wi-Fi free and reliable enough for my needs?
- Is parking or airport transfer available if I need it?
- Does the property suit my group — couple friendly, family friendly, pet friendly?
Read reviews the smart way
Do not rely on the overall score alone. Sort by most recent, look for patterns rather than one-off complaints, and pay attention to reviewers who travelled like you — families, business travellers or couples.
Use filters to save time
On Bookdence you can filter by price range, property type, star category, guest rating, amenities and suitability. Combining two or three filters usually narrows hundreds of listings down to a handful of strong options in seconds.
